The air is still heavy with the scent of mulled wine, gingerbread and other Christmas seasonings as Munich enters the New Year with its fairytale atmosphere intact. The magnificent Kandinsky retrospective on show in the Lenbachhaus gallery until 22 February is one of the best places to escape the cold. Ben Knight finds some other cosy retreats
Hamburg Airport
Bus: Buses leave for the city centre every 20 minutes, from 6am to 10pm. A single ticket costs €10, and a return costs €16.
Train: The journey from the airport to Hauptbahnhof (Munich’s central station) takes 40 minutes. The S1 and S8 trains run every 10 minutes and a single ticket costs €8,80.
Taxi: The average taxi fare to the city centre is €55 (€65 during rush hour).
Tourist information: There are two offices, at the main station (2 Bahnhofsplatz) and in the town hall (Neues Rathaus) in Marienplatz (tel. , www.muenchen.de).
Munich’s old town is many tourist’s mental cliché of Bavaria, but this welltrodden city centre offers surprises.
Sleep soundly – The new and very conveniently located Treff Hotel München City Centre is clean and comfortable. The slightly cheaper Hotel Cocoon has a much groovier vibe.
Must eat – The newly-opened ocui (31- 33 Oberanger, tel. ) is riding the wave of Italian-style, healthy fast food. All dishes here are made with fresh ingredients while you wait.
Dance the night away – The P1 (1 Prinzregentenstraße) nightclub once had legendary status among Munich celebrities. Now, having shed some of that exclusivity, it is perhaps more fun, though still fairly pricey.
Shop til you drop – For those into lovingly hand-crafted jewellery, the Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein (6-8 Pacellistraße) is a premium address
Always bursting with colour and energy, this quarter is fast becoming one of the most exciting parts of town.
Sleep soundly – The beautifully decorated Hotel Olympic ( has really imbibed the surrounding district’s parochial charm.
Must eat – Walter & Benjamin (1 Rumfordstraße, tel. ) is a restaurant in a wine shop. You’re waited on by wine experts while nibbling French and Italian delicacies. With its minimalist design and haute cuisine, G*-Munich (52 Geyerstraße, tel ), in the Hotel Prinzessin Elisabeth, has become one of the city’s top restaurants.
Shop til you drop – Pick up tasteful, luxurious bedclothes at Sunday in Bed (6 Rumfordstraße), a high-end linen shop that has its own in-house designer
One of Munich’s most vibrant, varied quarters, Haidhausen has a host of fascinating places to explore.
Sleep soundly – Opened last spring, Angelo Hotel has modern interiors and striking architecture. Rooms are all clean lines and flashes of bright colour.
Must eat – Nomiya (7 Wörthstraße, tel. ) offers exotically prepared Japanese food in Bavarian surroundings and is one of the most popular sushi restaurants in town. Go for the pickled radish with cucumbers or the ramen noodle soup.
Must drink – Negroni (9 Sedanstraße) is one of the most innovative bars in Munich, with over 100 whiskies and an extremely creative cocktail menu.
Dance the night away – For a slightly kitschy night out, you can’t do better than intimate little club Kölsch (6 Grafingerstraße), whose decor includes stags’ heads on the wall.
Schwabing has long held the mantle of Munich’s cultural district, enhanced by the presence of the huge university.
Sleep soundly – The Hotel-Pension Steinberg can count proximity to the beautiful Englischer Garten among its many charms.
Culture vultures – No followers of high art should miss the exhaustive Wassily Kandinsky retrospective in the Lenbachhaus (33 Luisenstraße), one of the great abstract artists of the 20th century and a former Munich resident.
Must eat – The fairly new Georgenhof (1 Friedrichstraße, tel. ), blends traditional Bavarian cuisine with lighter, more modern fare.
Must drink – The Vega Bar (56 Georgenstraße) manages to be unpretentious despite its psychedelic décor and cool clientele.
