As the Hungarian spring puts out a few tentative shoots, locals head to parks like Margaret Island, City Park and Millenáris. Now’s the time to ditch the metro and walk – with breaks for coff ee and drinks, naturally. Catch the Budapest Spring Festival (until 5 April, btf.hu), which features music, dance and theatre at venues all over town, says Carolyn Bánfalvi
Ferihegy International Airport
Bus: The No 93 bus leaves Terminal 1 and takes about 20 minutes, leaving every half hour from 4.55am to 8.50pm. Tickets cost €1 /HUF 230. A travel card gives you unlimited use of Budapest’s buses, trams, metro and cog-railway. A one-day card costs €5/HUF 1,350, a one-week card costs €15/HUF 3,600.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the city will take about 30 minutes and there’s a fixed price of €17/ HUF 4,200. Go to the Zona Taxi window at arrivals.

Városliget is home to museums, restaurants, an amusement park, a weekend flea market, a zoo and the Széchenyi Bathhouse.
Sleep soundly – The Ibis Budapest Heroes Square (106 Dózsa György út, tel. , accorhotels.com, rooms from €69/HUF 21,000) provides a convenient base from which to explore the park and the city, while the Mamaison Andrássy Hotel (111 Andrássy út, tel. , andrassyhotel.com, rooms from €105/HUF 32,000) is the most stylish boutique property around.
Culture vultures – Check out the notable collection of Spanish Masters at the Museum of Fine Arts (Hosök tere). Children will appreciate the wildlife at the Budapest Zoo (6-12 Állatkerti körút) while adults can admire its art nouveau architecture.
Must eat – Bagolyvár Étterem (2 Állatkerti út, tel. ) serves traditional Hungarian food and is staffed completely by women.
Shop til you drop – Sift through the Petofi Csarnok’s (14 Zichy Mihály út) weekend flea market.
Travellers who like to stay central will find more than enough to keep them occupied in the Belváros (city centre).
Sleep soundly – The Gerlóczy Rooms de Lux (1 Gerlóczy utca, tel. , gerloczy.hu, rooms from €85/ HUF 25,300) is a small boutique hotel above a Parisian-style café. Le Méridien Budapest (9-10 Erzsébet tér, tel. , lemeridien.com, rooms from €109/HUF 33,000) is more luxurious.
Culture vultures – Visit the Museum of Ethnography (12 Kossuth tér) for folk culture and crafts. The Parliament building (1-3 Kossuth Lajos tér) is open for guided tours.
Must eat – Culinaris Delicatesse (7 Balassi Bálint utca, tel. ) is attached to a gourmet shop and serves simple lunches. Momotaro Ramen (16 Széchenyi utca, tel. ) is a casual Chinese/Japanese place known for its ramen noodles.
Must drink – Head straight to Negro Café (11 Szent István tér) for fancy cocktails and Basilica views.
Shop til you drop – Pick up antiques at Nagyházi Galéria (8 Balaton utca) and BÁV (3 Szent István körút).
Held at Millenáris Park, the Budapest Fringe Festival (3-5 April, budapestfringe.com) hosts edgy (and often free) performances.
Culture vultures – Millenáris Park (20-22 Fény utca) was formerly a warehouse, but now holds an exhibition hall and the Palace of Miracles, an interactive scientific museum. Nearby galleries are concentrated on Várfok utca: Portál Gallery (no. 8), Várfok Gallery (no. 14), and XO Gallery (no. 11).
Must eat – Csalogány 26 (26 Csalogány utca, tel. ) serves simple but excellent Hungarian dishes with fantastic lunch specials. Auguszt Cukrászda (8 Fény utca) is one of the city’s finest places for cakes and coffee.
Must drink – Alkoholos Filc Kávézó (15/B Várfok utca) is a tiny bar lined with original artwork.
Shop til you drop – Pick up fresh fruit, vegetables and meat at the Fény utca Market (12 Lövoház utca).
Margitsziget is turning green again and is perfect for exploring and picnics. Check out the Japanese garden, the petting zoo and the medieval ruins.
Sleep soundly – Avoid the bustle of the city and stay at the Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget or its sister establishment, the Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget, right next door (both Margitsziget, tel. , danubiushotels.com, rooms from €106/HUF 32,000). Guests of both hotels have access to the Health Spa with its natural thermal baths.
Culture vultures – Rent a bike, go for a jog along the rubberised path or explore the Island on a bringó, a four-wheeled fourseater pedal cart.
