Tourist information: The main office can be found opposite Tivoli Gardens (tel. , visitcopenhagen.com).

CITY CENTRE

The city centre is a beautiful historic quarter that is easy to explore on foot.

Sleep soundly – The boutique Hotel Front (21 Sankt Annæ Plads, tel. , front.dk, rooms from €233/DKK 1700) offers the latest in Nordic design without being cold and soulless, and has panoramic views over the harbour.

Culture vultures – Catch the latest in Danish and international cinema during the first edition of CPH:PIX, which is showcasing more than 170 feature films at various cinemas across the city.

Must eat – Tuck into steamed cod with mussels, salsify, dill sauce and potatoes at Custom House Bar&Grill (44 Havnegade, tel. ), part of design guru Terence Conran’s stable. If you’re on a budget, make your own burger at Halifax (35 Eriksborggade, tel. ), which has received rave reviews from local food critics.

Must drink – In the daytime, warm up with a mint tea at the Moroccan café The á la Menthe (5B Rådhusstræde). At night, sip a Blackberry Margarita at cocktail lounge Ruby (10 Nybrogade).

CHRISTIANIA

Founded in 1971, the “Free State of Christiania” is a hippie enclave that has kept its alternative ethos alive.

Culture vultures – Take a stroll through the quiet residential lanes of Christiania and admire the very individual local houses surrounded by a peaceful, natural environment.

Must eat – Vegetarians will be spoilt for choice at Morgenstedet (134 Fabriksområdet), a cosy organic café, while meat eaters can tuck into the best egg and bacon in town at Café Månefiskeren (43 Bådsmandsstræde).

Dance the night away – Musik Loppen (4B Sydområdet) is one of Copenhagen’s top venues for indie rock.

Shop til you drop – Find a bicycle at Christiania Bikes (83A Mælkevejen), an institution for local residents as cars are not allowed in the Free State.

CHRISTIANSHAVN

Nicknamed “Little Amsterdam”, Christianshavn is a romantic area of Dutch-style townhouses and canals.

Culture vultures – The Danish Architecture Centre (27b Strandgade) is holding a special exhibition on the work of the leading Danish architect Bjarke Ingels until 31 May. A quick stroll to the neighbouring area of Ørestad will lead you to the dazzling new Danish Radio Concert Hall (20 Emil Holms Kanal). On the outside, it looks like a cobalt blue cube. Inside the auditorium, you feel like you’re floating in a sea of wood.

Must eat – Tuck into a grilled king crab (a bit like lobster) on board Restaurant Viva (570 Langebrogade Kaj, tel. ), a boat anchored along one of Copenhagen’s major canals. The exclusive Era Ora (33B Overgaden Neden Vandet, tel. ) serves top-notch Italian dishes and the menu changes with the availability of fresh produce from Italy. It’s good for lunch too – try the roasted quail over aubergine and tomato sauce.

Shop til you drop – The cute womenswear boutique Porte à Gauche (20 Torvegade) sells items by young Danish designers such as Louise Mehl and Beck Söndergaard.

ØSTERBRO

Elegant and sedate, Ørrebro is where Copenhagen’s well-heeled live.

Sleep soundly – The quirky Hotel Rye (115 Ryesgade, tel. , hotelrye. dk, rooms from €81/DKK 600) provides kimonos for all guests and serves homemade buns for breakfast.

Must drink – Panzón (6 Rosenvænget Allé) is a cosy wine bar with a fairly good selection of niche Danish and international beers.

Dance the night away – Sip a passion fruit Daiquiri at Café Bopa (8 Løgstørgade), a Gallic cocktail bar hosting DJs on Thurdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Shop til you drop – Moshi Moshi (34 Dag Hammarskjölds Allé) stocks beautiful designer clothes, including Scandi designers Philippa K, Peter Jensen and Iben Høj.
