Surrounded by verdant wineproducing regions, Lyon is a great place to be in spring and summer. Currently, the Musée de l’Imprimerie is staging Un Homme de Lettres (until 28 June), an exhibition of rare printing and calligraphy. Laura Sharpe shows us round

Getting around

Saint Exupéry Airport

Bus: There is the Satobus every 20 minutes to and from the airport. Buses run from 5.35am to 11.40pm, seven days a week. A single ticket to the city costs €8.60 and the journey takes about 50 minutes.
Taxi: A taxi to the city centre costs approximately €50 during the day and €65 at night, taking around 45 minutes.
Tourist information: The main tourist office is located at Place Bellecour (tel. , en. www.lyon-france.com).

PRESQU’ILE – 1ST AND 2ND DISTRICTS

The finger of land stretching between the rivers is a haven for shoppers and history buffs alike.

Sleep soundly – Renovated by Lyonbased artists, Hotel Azur (64 Rue Victor Hugo, tel. , hotelazurlyon.com, rooms from €42) has been welcoming guests for more than 100 years.

Culture vultures – Displaying an amazing collection of printed documents dating back to the 16th century, the Musée de l’Imprimerie (13 Rue de la Poulaillerie) is now showing sensual, romantic work by calligraphy expert Roger Druet.

Must eat – Goman Etsu (11 Rue Lanterne, tel. ) rustles up exciting Japanese food. Institut Vatel (8 Rue Duhamel, tel. ) does refined dishes such as monkfish fillet with prawn mousse.

Dance the night away – Head to Le Yes (12 Quai Saint Vincent) for pared-down electro in polished surroundings.

VIEUX LYON

Take in the pastel-coloured archways, façades and hidden passageways from the foot of Fourvière hill.

Sleep soundly – The luxe Cour des Loges (6 Rue du Boeuf, tel. , courdesloges.com, rooms from €247) is housed in a 16th-century building. Auberge de Jeunesse du Vieux Lyon (41-45 Montée du Chemin Neuf, tel. , rooms from €14,60) has impressive city views.

Culture vultures – Musée des Miniatures et Décors de Cinéma (60 Rue Saint Jean) displays detailed models used in special-effect films.

Must eat – Head to La Cannelle (103 Quai Pierre Scize, tel. ) for West Indian specialities such as lime chicken.

Must drink – La Shisha des Gones (11 Rue Ferrachat) serves hot tea and North African pastries alongside the fragrant aromas of the shisha.

Dance the night away – Rock Star (112 Quai Pierre Scize) pumps up the volume with new wave and metal.

Shop til you drop – Le Sirop de la Rue (16 Rue Saint Jean) stocks edible gifts, such as saucisson (dried sausage) and unusual kinds of jam.

CROIX-ROUSSE

Overlooking the city, the silk-weaving quarter has a small-town feel.

Sleep soundly – With an large pool, Hotel Lyon Métropole (85 Quai Joseph Gillet, tel. , lyonmetropole. com, rooms from €140) doubles as a sumptuous spa. The friendly and comfortable Hotel de la Croix Rousse (157 Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse, tel. , hotel-lyon-croixrousse. com, rooms from €57,50) has great views.

Must eat – Lively La Bodeguita Cubana (44 Rue de Cuire, tel. ) does Cuban food.

Must drink – Café Chantecler (151 Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse) sells a range of artisan beers and has a shaded terrace where you can enjoy the spring sunshine.

Shop til you drop – En Bobine Moi (21 Rue René Leynaud) stocks a unique collection of designer clothing.

RIVE GAUCHE

Admire the gardens and glittering lake at Parc de la Tête d’Or

Sleep soundly – Radisson SAS Hotel Lyon (129 Rue Servient, tel. , lyon.radissonsas.com, rooms from €155) has the distintion of being the tallest hotel in Europe. Set in a quiet street near the park, Au Patio Morand (99 Rue du Créqui, tel. , hotel-morand.fr, rooms from €75) is full of charm.

Must eat – Puddings at En Mets Fais ce Qu’il te Plaît (43 Rue Chevreuil, tel. ) are excellent – try the white chocolate raspberry mousse.

Must drink – Indocafé (14 Rue de la Thibaudière) has the most extravagant cocktails in town.

Dance the night away – Dress up to the nines and head to First Tendency (13 Place Jules Ferry).

Shop til you drop – Univers de Japon (81 Rue Tronchet) sells exquisite tea services and calligraphy sets.
