Denmark : Copenhagen - June 2009

Country Code: Dial for Denmark

Copenhagen is at its best in June, as the city comes back to life after the long, dark winter. The moment the sun shines, the locals throng the parks and café terraces. The Tivoli amusement park – a local institution – has opened a new attraction, and the excellent Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is showing a Green Architecture for the Future exhibition until 4 August. Connie Mikkelsen tells us more

Getting around

Copenhagen Airport

Train: The journey from the airport costs €4/DKK 30. Trains stop at all the major urban stations, taking around 13 minutes to reach the city centre. The metro takes 19 minutes to reach the city centre and stops at Nørreport too. Tickets are also €4/DKK 30.
Taxi: A trip into the centre costs around €27/DKK 200 and takes 20 minutes.
Tourist information: The main office can be found opposite Tivoli Gardens (tel. , visitcopenhagen.com).

CITY CENTRE

Copenhagen’s stylish city centre, which is full of elegant 19th-century houses, is perfect to explore on foot. Bicycles and pedestrians, rather than cars, dominate the area.

Sleep soundly – Housed in a Moorishinspired palace in the Tivoli Gardens, Nimb Hotel (5 Bernstorffsgade, tel. , nimb.dk, rooms from €524/DKK 3,900) offers 13 beautifully designed rooms, each with its own unique style. Go for broke and book into room 11 in the hotel’s east wing; it’s huge and kitted out in dark, polished woods with a big, button-back sofa.

Culture vultures – In May, the famous Tivoli Gardens (3 Vesterbrogade) added a new attraction that allows you to pilot a flight simulator at speeds of up to 100km per hour.

Must eat – Restaurant Herman (5 Bernstorffsgade, tel. ) has just won a Michelin star for its innovative cuisine, which includes seared foie gras served as an applecake with nougat and airy apple meringues. Or you can sample a traditional Danish frokost (brunch), with herring, cheese and pâtés, at Restaurant Gammel Strand (42 Gammel Strand, tel. ).

ROSENBORG

Situated to the north-west of the city centre, this quiet, leafy area is home to some of the city’s top museums.

Culture vultures – Danish sculptor Christian Lemmerz is showcasing a series of new works in bronze at the Statens Museum for Kunst (48-50 Sølvgade) until next March. Davids Samling (30 Kronprinsessegade), a collection of Islamic, European and Danish art, reopened in May after extensive renovations.

Must eat – The elegant Kokkeriet (64 Kronprinsessegade, tel. ) has a Michelin star for its original dishes, such as lobster with beetroot, snails and blackcurrants, and veal tails with sweetbreads and onions. Margrethe Kofoed Olsen dishes up excellent Mediterranean cuisine made with market-fresh ingredients at the New York loft-style Sult (8b Vognmagergade, tel. ), housed inside the Danish Film Institute.

NØRREBRO

Multicultural Nørrebro is one of the hippest addresses in the Danish capital.

Sleep soundly – Green-minded travellers on a budget will enjoy Sleep- In Green (18 Ravnsborggade, tel. , sleep-in-green.dk, beds from €16/DKK 120), a hostel that serves organic breakfasts and gets its electricity from its own solar panels.

Must drink – Props Coffee Shop (5 Blågårdsgade) is a chilled local bar where patrons can buy all the furniture, from the posters on the walls to the chairs they sit on.

Dance the night away – Gefährlich (7 Fælledvej) has regular electronic, rock and soul nights.

Shop til you drop – Time’s Up (2 Blågardsgade) sells excellent vintage clothes from the 1920s to the 1970s, including haute couture pieces by Givenchy, Dior and Cardin.

VESTERBRO

Formerly Copenhagen’s red-light district, Vesterbro has shed some of its seedy reputation to become one of the liveliest quarters in town.

Must drink – In the daytime, check out records while drinking coffee at Sort Kaffe og Vinyl (4 Skydebanegade). In the evenings, sip a strawberry daiquiri at Den Navnløse Coktailbodega (4 Kingosgade).

Dance the night away – Vega (40 Enghavevej) is one of the city’s best clubs. Former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell plays here on 29 June.

Shop til you drop – Danish designer Hanne Zachariassen has crammed all her colourful designs into her tiny shop Asfalt (83 Istedgade). For girly second-hand clothes, head across the street to Pigen og Pigen (92 Istedgade).
