Tourist information: The main office is at 27 Hamngatan, with the entrance on Kungsträdgården (tel. , stockholmtown.com).
In less than a century, this area has gone from a ghetto to bohemian to being where it’s most definitely at. The current residents are young(ish), professional and fashion forward.
Sleep soundly – Rival (3 Mariatorget, tel. , rival.se, rooms from €140/SEK 1,490) is a quirky option – a hotel, bakery, club and restaurant all in one, situated right on Mariatorget. Check into suites 704 or 706 for a furnished balcony overlooking the green oasis.
Culture vultures – Parkteatern stages performances several times a week in Vitabergsparken. Enjoy concerts, ballet and music free of charge. Pick up a programme at Kulturhuset (Sergels Torg), your hotel or the tourist office.
Must eat – Sill och Snaps (95 Folkungagatan, tel. ) means herring and shots. The Swedish speciality is served here.
Must drink – If you’re tiring of the taut Swedish sense of interior design, head to Indigo (19 Götgatan) where every ornament and piece of furniture comes in a riot of rainbow colours.
Shop til you drop – Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair (46b Bondegatan) is a finely tailored label that won Designer of the Year at the Swedish Elle awards in 2009.
This may not be the most scenic part of Stockholm, but it’s definitely filled with lots of things to do, see and buy.
Sleep soundly – Nordic Light Hotel (7 Vasaplan, tel. , nordiclighthotel.se, rooms from €145/ SEK 1,530) sits at the geographical heart of Stockholm. The deluxe and superior mood rooms all feature a ‘light bed’ that lets you select coloured and patterned lighting.

Must eat – Brut Bar (4 Mäster Samuelsgatan, tel. ) serves fish and oysters, but above all it prides itself on an excellent selection of sparkling wines. Lunch with your head in the clouds at KulturhusTaket (Sergels Torg, tel. ), an organic café located on the roof of the Kulturhuset.
Must drink – Head for the dessert room at the back of Cloud Nine (1 Torsgatan) for after-dinner drinks and something sweet. Grab a booth if you can.
Dance the night away – From May to September, the open-air F12 (12 Fredsgatan) is the destination of choice for hedonists of all ages, and who can blame them?
Shop til you drop – Hope (12 Norrlandsgatan) is another Swedish label famous for timeless and distinctive designs. It’s especially good for menswear.
This part of town may be a bit sleepy, but there are also real gems hidden along the serene residential streets.
Sleep soundly – The bright and modern First Hotel Amaranten (31 Kungsholmsgatan, tel. , firsthotels.com, rooms from €95/ SEK 1,000) is on the corner of lively Scheelegatan. If you need pampering, book a First Lady room stocked with beauty products and magazines.
Must eat – Spisa hos Helena (18 Scheelegatan, tel. ) does uncomplicated, tasty food. Try the succulent Maine lobster. Petite France (6 John Ericssonsgatan, tel. ) is a cramped but cosy French bakery/restaurant, with amazing sourdough bread and cute patio dining. Take a scenic walk along Norr Mälarstrand afterwards.
