Getting around

Copenhagen Airport

Train: The journey from the airport costs €4/DKK 30. Trains stop at all the major urban stations, taking around 13 minutes to reach the city centre. The metro takes 19 minutes to reach the city centre and stops at Nørreport too. Tickets are also €4/DKK 30.
Taxi: A trip into the centre costs around €27/DKK 200 and takes 20 minutes.
Tourist information: The main office can be found opposite Tivoli Gardens (tel. , visitcopenhagen.com).

CITY CENTRE

Copenhagen’s compact city centre is a real looker and has great shopping.

Sleep soundly – Stylish, spacious, with stunning views of the harbour, the newly refurbished Scandic Front (21 Sankt Annae Plads, tel. , scandichotels.com, rooms from €200/ DKK 1488) is one of Copenhagen’s most forward-thinking hotels. Bedrooms are designed to be environmentally friendly, ahead of the arrival of the UN climate change conference in December, while the location – just a two-minute stroll from Nyhavn – couldn’t be better.

Culture vultures – On the same square as the Front hotel stands the beautiful Royal Danish Theatre (36 Sankt Annæ Plads), all glass and oak – a marvel of minimalist architecture. From there you can admire the majestic Opera House (10 Ekvipagemestervej), across Copenhagen’s main canal. The National Museum (10 Ny Vestergade) is hosting an exhibition on global warming to dovetail with the UN conference.

Must eat – Enjoy a juicy sirloin steak at Custom House Bar & Grill (44 Havnegade, tel. ), the brainchild of British design guru Terence Conran. They do good puddings too – try the chocolate tart with chantilly cream.

Shop til you drop – Stock up on design essentials at the Bodum flagship store (10 Østergade).

ISLANDS BRYGGE

This harbour-front area, formerly a rundown industrial neighbourhood, is now home to many of Copenhagen’s most innovative architectural projects.

Culture vultures – Take a walk starting at Havneparken (the Harbour Bath, at the intersection of Islands Brygge and Langebro Bridge), an open-air swimming pool with a fun wooden tower serving as a plunging board. Walk down Islands Brygge, passing the Press, Wennberg and Seed Silos, three industrial installations turned into space-age residential buildings.

Must drink – Enjoy the waterside views over a Carslberg at Kulturhuset (18 Islands Brygge). To get a feel of what the area used to be like, head to the old-fashioned Café Isbjørnen, (The Polar Bear Café, 1 Reykjaviksgade).

Dance the night away – Kulturhuset (18 Islands Brygge) will have live music and improv theatre on 5 November and a jazz night on 12 November.

ØSTERBRO

Elegant and sedate, Østerbro is where Copenhagen’s well-heeled live.

Sleep soundly – You can rent a room or a whole flat, either by the night or by the week, at Hotel 9 Små Hjem (Hotel 9 Small Homes, 38 Classensgade, tel. , 9smaahjem.dk, rooms from €80/DKK 595)

Dance the night away – On 15 November The Prodigy will play Docken (35 Færgehavnsvej), a former industrial warehouse turned into a seaside bar and music venue.

Shop til you drop – Fans of Scandinavian design should stop at Normann Copenhagen (70 Østerbrogade). Voigt (110 Østerbrogade) stocks elegant womenswear by designers such as Sweden’s Filippa K or France’s Vanessa Bruno.

CHRISTIANIA

The “Free State of Christiania” is a hippie enclave founded in 1971.

Culture vultures – Take a walk around the fortifications, a nature paradise right in the centre of Copenhagen, and stroll through the quieter parts of Christiania, which are dotted with some very individual local houses.

Must eat – Every day is different at Spiseloppen (43 Bådsmandsstræde, tel. ) a restaurant collective – and local institution – where the menu changes daily with the cooks. But there’s always a fish and a vegetarian option. In the same building, tuck into the best fry-up in town at Café Månefiskeren (43 Bådsmandsstræde), which is the epicentre of coffee life in Christiania.

Must drink – Kick back with a pint or two at Café Nemoland (52 Fabriksområde), which has DJ nights every Friday and Saturday.
