After many long, dark months, Stockholm’s locals are determined to relish every second of summer. Regardless of what the thermometer says, this is the city’s prime time. Victoria Larsson digs out her summer sandals

Getting around

Airport is 8km west of the city.

Bus: Flygbussarna buses link the airport with Stockholm’s bus/train station, Cityterminalen. The journey costs €14/ SEK 130 return and takes 20 minutes, with departures every 20 minutes at peak times.
Taxi: Licensed cabs are available outside the terminal. The fare to the city centre is about €20/SEK 186.
Tourist information: The main office is at 27 Hamngatan, with the entrance on Kungsträdgården (tel. , stockholmtown.com).

ÖSTERMALM

The most famous landmark in this swanky neighbourhood is probably the concrete mushroom in the middle of nightlife hub Stureplan. The giant fungus has become a symbol of the unchecked hedonism prevailing in the area; night owls always end up here.w

Sleep soundly – Berns (Berzelii Park, tel. , berns.se, rooms from €274/SEK2650) is a boutique hotel with 82 rooms furnished in cherry wood and equipped with luxury skincare products. It’s part of a nightlife empire, so you can drink, eat and go clubbing without having to leave the premises.

Must eat – Dark and romantic Bistro Nouveau (7 Kommendörsgatan, tel. ) serves French classics such as moules frites and salad Niçoise.

Must drink – Debaser Humlegården (Humlegården) is an outdoor rock café in the green oasis of Humlegården that attracts a young, hip and thirsty crowd.

Dance the night away – Riche (4 Birger Jarlsgatan) has been around for more than a hundred years – you’ll find artsy kids hanging with brats and tourists.

Shop til you drop – Praised for her way with silhouettes, Carin Rodebjer’s pieces at Rodebjer (6 Jakobsbergsgatan) manage to be timeless and contemporary.

KUNGSHOLMEN

Home to many young professionals and their small children, this island features some of Stockholm’s best beaches. Sprawling Rålambshovsparken fills up with sun worshippers, picnic parties and frisbee players at this time of year.

Sleep soundly – The sleek, bright First Hotel Amaranten (31 Kungsholmsgatan, tel. , firsthotels.com, rooms from €134/SEK 1300) is within walking distance of Kungsholmen’s best restaurants, and is also close to the rest of the city. Enjoy breakfast on the roof if the weather allows.

Must eat – Right on the shore of Lake Mälaren, Kungsholmen (464 Kajplats, Norr Mälarstrand, tel. ) features seven separate kitchens and a floating annex called Pontonen. There’s a fun atmosphere and great cocktails.

Must drink – All onboard M/S Gerda (466 Kajplats, Norr Mälarstrand), the party boat. Feel the tug of the waves without ever leaving the harbour.

SÖDERMALM

Once Stockholm’s working class quarters, Södermalm is now almost painfully trendy.

Sleep soundly – Rival (3 Mariatorget, tel. , rival.se, rooms from €155/SEK 1495) is a 1930s art deco cinema that’s been lovingly converted into one of Stockholm’s nicest and most unique hotels – by Benny Andersson of Swedish super-group Abba.

Culture vultures – During the summer, Parkteatern offers a wide variety of free entertainment in the beautifully hilly Vitabergsparken, with everything from circus acts to poetry readings. Look out for listings in cafés, shops and bars.

Must eat – Fun, funky and relaxed, Sjögräs (24 Timmermansgatan, 1200) does fish really well and presents Sweden’s biggest rum selection. Hermans (23b Fjällgatan, tel. ) serves a vegetarian buffet along with a lush patio and stellar view.

Must drink – The insanely popular beer garden Mosebacke (3 Mosebacke Torg) is perched on the rocky heights of Söder.

Shop til you drop – Bruno (36 Götgatan) is a funky mall centred around a sky-lit café. You’ll find plenty of Swedish design, as well as Miss Sixty, Adidas and American Apparel stores.
