Copenhagen comes to life in the summer months as the Danes make the most of the long sunny evenings by packing out pavement cafes and kicking back to live music when this month’s Jazz Festival comes to town. Cathy Strongman discovers the endless days that make Copenhagen in July hard to beat
Copenhagen Airport
Train: The journey from the airport costs €4/DKK 30. Trains stop at all the major urban stations, taking around 13 minutes to reach the city centre. The metro takes 19 minutes to reach the city centre and stops at Nørreport too. Tickets are also €4/DKK 30.
Taxi: A trip into the centre costs around €27/DKK 200 and takes 20 minutes.

Take a tour through cutting-edge Danish design before enjoying some of the Jazz Festival events.
Sleep soundly – Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Arne Jacobsendesigned Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (1 Hammerichsgade, tel. , radissonblu.com, rooms from €147/DKK 1,095) is centrally located. Room 606 has been perfectly preserved since the grand opening.
Must eat – Grab an outside table at Café Europa 1989 (1 Amagertorv, tel. ) located on one of the city’s most bustling squares, and tuck into a delicious salad. For fancier fare, Kokkeriet (64 Kronprinsessegade, tel. ) serves Michelin-star Danish food with a French twist.
Dance the night away – Enjoy the Copenhagen Jazz Festival (2-11 July, jazz.dk) at the Copenhagen JazzHouse (10 Niels Hemmingsens Gade).
Shop til you drop – Stig P (14 Kronprinsensgade) is packed with clothes and shoes by Danish designers such as True and Imelda, and brands including Paul & Joe and See by Chloé.
In recent years this working-class district has been transformed into a vibrant and creative area.
Must eat – For tasty, mid-priced food head to Dyrehaven (72 Sønder Boulevard, dyrehavenkbh.dk), decked out with antlers and retro furniture. Go for breakfast or lunch to avoid the rush.
Must drink – With battered old chairs, pinball machines and achingly cool clientele, Bang & Jensen (130 Istedgade) is good for morning coffee or an evening beer.
Dance the night away – There’s nearly always a queue outside Jolene Bar (81-85 Flæsketorvet), a popular haunt in the old meatpacking district.
Shop til you drop – DASK Gallery (24 Flæsketorvet) is one of the most exciting art spaces in the city, with photographic art by Danish and international photographers.
Copenhagen’s most romantic district is filled with grand parks, secluded lakes and fairytale palaces.
Sleep soundly – Set back from the main road with views over Copenhagen’s lakes, Hotel Kong Arthur (11 Nørre Søgade, tel. , kongarthur.dk, rooms from €240/DKK 1,800) is a carbon-neutral hotel. Within walking distance of the metro, it’s also home to the Helle Thorup Spa.
Culture vultures – Dominating the beautiful King’s Garden is Rosenborg Slot (4A Øster Voldgade) a 17th-century castle built by King Christian IV.
Must eat – A trip to Denmark isn’t complete without trying smørrebrød (an open sandwich): Aamanns (10 Øster Farimagsgade) sells a delicious variety.
Created by Frederik V in the 18th century, this area is dominated by royal and religious neoclassical buildings.
Culture vultures – Explore the Kastellet (Churchill Park) a star-shaped fortress built by Frederik III in 1662 and Europe’s oldest working fort. Inside the ramparts you’ll find cobbled streets and pretty red terraces, and can enjoy a view out to the Øresund and Swedish coast.
Must eat – Vespa (90 Store Kongensgade, tel ) is a popular restaurant with a pared-down, contemporary feel and a daily set menu for €33,50/DKK 250 featuring four Italian-inspired courses.
Must drink – Kafferiet (44 Esplanaden) is a dinky coffee shop selling cold drinks, cakes and generous café lattes.
