Germany : Nuremberg - July 2010

Country Code: Dial for Germany

A sophisticated city, Nuremberg boasts a vibrant mix of trendy restaurants and cultural venues – plus this month it hosts motorsport event the Norisring Rennen. Carole French discovers one of Germany’s most charismatic short break destinations

Getting around

NUE

Bus: Buses 32 and 33 provide direct access to Terminal 1, from Thon terminus and from Nürnberg-Buch respectively. They run at 10-minute intervals.
Train: The U2 underground line directly connects the airport with Nuremberg’s Hauptbahnhof. The journey takes about 12 minutes and costs €1,80.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs around €16 and takes about 15 minutes.
Tourist information: The central tourist office is at 18 Hauptmarkt (tel. , nuernberg.de).

CITY CENTRE – HAUPTMARKT

Full of cobbled streets, timbered houses and ancient churches, the heart of this compact walled metropolis is the Hauptmarkt, with the Schöner Brunnen (beautiful fountain) as its focal point.

Sleep soundly – Relax in the hugely attractive Hotel am Schönen Brunnen (17 Hauptmarkt, tel. , hotel-schoener-brunnen.com, rooms from €90). It’s within easy reach of the Norisring, venue for the Norisring Rennen race (2-4 July, norisring.de).

Culture vultures – Head for the medieval churches Frauenkirche (Hauptmarkt) and St Sebalduskirche (26 Winklerstrasse) to see stunning gothic architecture.

Must drink – Serving a host of local beers, Heilig Geist Spital (16 Spitalgasse) is usually full of city folk.

Shop til you drop – Breite Gasse, Karolinenstrasse and Kaiserstrasse are where the city’s most select shops can be found, among them T-Punkt (32-34 Karolinenstrasse) and Parfumerie Lehr (46 Kaiserstrasse).

LORENZER SEITE

Separated from the Old Town by the river Pegnitz, this district is home to fashionable Lorenzer Platz.

Sleep soundly – Housed in a fine historic building, the Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nuremberg (1-3 Bahnhofstrasse, 23220, starwoodhotels.com, rooms from €115) offers elegant rooms and specially blended cocktails in its art deco-style Atelier Bar.

Culture vultures – The Mauthalle (2 Hallplatz) is a mighty 15th-century gothic structure that once housed a granary. The city’s official scales, used to determine the weight of farmers’ and merchants’ products, were located here.

Must eat – The Literaturhaus Nürnberg (6 Luitpoldstrasse, tel. ) is a huge bookshop with a restaurant serving traditional dishes with a twist.

Must drink – Its selection of Irish beer and whiskey, plus major sporting events shown on large screens, ensure that Finnegan’s Harp Irish Pub (80 Königstrasse) has a regular clientele.

Shop til you drop – With medieval walls as its backdrop, the Handwerkerhof, or Craftsmen’s Courtyard (Am Königstor, daily except Sundays), is full of traditional Franconian handicrafts and homemade confectionery. Treat yourself to some Nuremberg glass, or the delicious gingerbread for which the city is famous.

FRAUENTORGRABEN

The area off the Frauentorgraben is a leafy district just outside the city walls full of relaxing hotels and eateries.

Sleep soundly – Super-modern Leonardo Hotel Nürnberg (22 Zufuhrstrasse, 27760, leonardo-hotels.com, rooms from €69) is within walking distance of the sights and yet offers a great place to unwind. Be sure to see the view from its roof terrace.

Culture vultures – For something entirely different, visit the Planetarium (41 Am Plärrer) to see how the universe works.

Must eat – Take a break with a light snack at the Planetarium’s chic foyer eatery, the Sternencafé (41 Am Plarrer, tel. ).

Must drink – The Nürnberger Treff is one of the trendiest bars in the city – you’ll find it inside the Maritim Nürnberg Hotel (11 Frauentorgraben, 23630, maritim.de).
