Getting around
Son Sant Joan Airport is about 8km east of the city.
Bus: The line 1 bus links the airport to Palma. It runs every 15 minutes from 6am to 2am, and costs €1,85. For island-wide bus connections, alight at Plaza España.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the city centre will take about 15 minutes and cost around €20.
Tourist information: The main office is at 2 Plaça de la Reina (tel. , illesbalears.es).
CASCO ANTIGUO
Dominated by the gothic cathedral, Palma’s historic centre is a maze of cobblestoned streets where you can find great shopping, quiet squares and lively bars to take you well into the morning.
Sleep soundly – The chic style of Puro Urban (12 Carrer Monte Negro, tel. , purohotel.com, doubles from €195) combines white minimalism and bohemian Asian motifs. Evenings are best spent on the terrace with a cocktail.
Culture vultures – Don’t miss The Monkey Show at Galeria Kewenig (s/n Carrer de San Feliu) by the Uruguayan artist Marcelo Viquez, which highlights 20 outstanding original works.
Must drink – Filled with beautiful people, Puro Beach (1 Carrer de Pagell, Cala Estancia) offers a bar, food, swimming pool and luxury spa.
Shop til you drop – Discover art and clothing at Rosario P (20 Carrer San Jaime). You’ll find hand-painted silk dresses, tops, scarves and shawls.
PLAÇA MAYOR AND AROUND
The tree-lined streets and tiny lanes that radiate off Palma’s central square are full of surprises.
Culture vultures – Enjoy two great art exhibitions during May at CaixaForum (3 Plaça Weyler). Paisajes Neuronales turns scanned images of the human brain into colourful works of art, while Women: A Mirror on Culture highlights the place of females throughout the world.
Must eat – Chic but accessible, Simply Fosh (7A Carrer de la Missió, tel. ) boasts a dining room and garden courtyard that combine clean lines with bright colours. The menu from Chef Marc Fosh includes chilled yellow gazpacho, black rice with cuttlefish and tangy parmesan gnocchi.
Shop til you drop – Dress yourself in pure white this summer at Blanc du Nil (31 Carrer Jaime II). Specialising in crisp Egyptian cotton, this store offers every type of garment for him and her – but just one colour.
PASEO MARITIMO
Get into the nautical swing of things along this long waterfront promenade. Check out the boats, catch the breezes and rest for a while under the palms.

Perfectly situated near the nightlife, this five-star hotel offers a spa, gym and unique water therapy circuit to help you relax, while the terrace pool with alfresco restaurant is the place to catch some rays.
Must eat – Watch the yachts come and go as you dine on paella, grilled fish and salads at El Pesquero (s/n Carrer Moll de la Llotja, ).
PLAÇA ESPAÑA AND AROUND
Surrounded by pedestrian shopping streets and restaurants, this shady square is a good place for some people watching. It’s also a hub for trains and buses to other parts of the island.
Sleep soundly – Perfect for budget travellers, Hostal Terminus (5 Plaça España, tel. , reservas@ terminushostal.com, doubles from €52), has comfortable rooms of old-world charm and is close to the transport links.
Culture vultures – Walk the ‘art mile’ along the traffic-free Carrer San Miguel to discover original works on sale from local artists, or sit for a while and get your portrait sketched.
Must eat – Immerse yourself in Mallorcan cuisine at Ca’n Carlos (5 Carrer Aigua, tel. ). Don’t miss the grilled cuttlefish with garlic and parsley sauce, or the fresh asparagus wrapped in Iberian ham.
