Add top-class musical venues, smart shops and restaurants, and this month’s Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest – a festival celebrating the advent of spring – and you have a city full of zest. Getting around
STR
Bus: The eXpresso bus provides a direct service to the city centre from 5.20am to 10.44pm. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs €6,15.
Train: S-Bahn trains leave Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof every 10 or 20 minutes from 4.55am to 12.25am. The journey to the airport takes 27 minutes and costs €3,10.
Taxi: A taxi from the airport to the city centre costs around €30 and takes about 20 minutes.
Tourist information: The central tourist office is at 1a Königstrasse ( 22280, stuttgart-tourist.de).
CITY CENTRE
The heart of Stuttgart revolves around Schlossplatz – with its baroque castle – Karlsplatz and Schillerplatz squares. The area is a shopper’s paradise.
Sleep soundly – The Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin (7 Arnulf-Klett-Platz, 20480, stuttgart.steigen berger.de, rooms from €115) is a luxury option, with comfort, fine dining and a Shiseido Spa in the heart of the city.
Culture vultures – Named after the famous optician, Carl Zeiss Planetarium (Mittlerer Schlossgarten) houses one of the world’s most advanced projectors and offers a glimpse into another world.
Must eat – Restaurant Délice (61 Hauptstätter Strasse, tel. ) is a Michelin-starred eatery with dishes that are as pretty as they are delicious – try the seafood terrine.
Must drink – Trendy Zwölfzehn (45 Paulinenstrasse) is the place for late-night cocktails and indie sounds.
Shop til you drop – Stuttgart is famous for its shops. Head for the pedestrianised Königstrasse, where everything from gadgets to the latest fashions can be found – especially at the big and shiny Königsbau Passagen shopping mall (26 Königstrasse) and the Breuninger department store (Marktplatz).
BAD CANNSTATT
The largest district of the city, Bad Cannstatt is synonymous with names such as Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Daimler. It’s also home to the Cannstatter Wasen fairground, site of April’s Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest.
Sleep soundly – The Hilton Garden Inn Stuttgart (75 Mercedesstrasse, tel. , hiltongardeninn. hilton.com, rooms from €134) has a business centre for the working traveller, and a spa and restaurant for rest and relaxation.
Culture vultures – No visit to Stuttgart would be complete without a wander around the Mercedes-Benz Museum (100 Mercedesstrasse), with its eye-catching architecture and fabulous collection of cars.
Must eat – With elegant décor and a menu of fine German dishes such as Gaisburger marsch – a delicious stew of meat with pasta – the Cannstatter Tor (30 Bahnhofstrasse, tel. ) is ideal for a relaxing meal with friends.
Must drink – Chill out with a drink at Jacky’s Club Bar (69 König-Karl Strasse).
BOTNANG & STUTTGART WEST
Characterised by boulevards, woodlands and streams, this district to the west of the city sits high on a hill. It’s best known for the landmark Castle Solitude.
Sleep soundly – The Hotel Hirsch (2-6 Fellbacher Strasse, 95130, hotel-hirsch-fellbach.de, rooms from €69) is a compact, modern hotel with a restaurant and conference facilities.
Culture vultures – See the fabulous roof frescos of the 18th-century Castle Solitude (1 Solitude), otherwise known as the Solitude Palace, which was built by the Duke of Württemberg in the 1760s. It is home to an acclaimed school, the Akademie Schloss Solitude.
Must eat – Elegance, fine dining and superb wine go hand-in-hand at gourmet Bo’teca die Vino (30 Beethovenstrasse, tel. ), with a menu that includes specialities such as maultaschen; a tasty Swabian ravioli.
STUTTGART SOUTH
South of the city is green, with elegant buildings and lots of opportunities to walk alongside the Neckar River and in the area’s many parks.
Sleep soundly – Rest easy at the Hotel Ibis Stuttgart City (15 Presselstrasse, tel. , ibishotel.com, rooms from €55), a modern hotel that lies within easy reach of the centre.
Culture vultures – Be sure to visit the Lapidarium (24 Mörickestrasse), a glorious park designed following a Renaissance style with 17th-century porches, stone staircases and statues, and beds full of flowers.
Must eat – Enjoy local spätzle – flat noodles – and other regional dishes at the elegantly chic Restaurant Wielandshöhe (71 Alte Weinsteige, tel. ).
