Welcome to the Inflight Magazine of Brussels Airlines
At the Office: Nude and Improved Start by getting the basics right. A really good eye cream like Hylexin (€95) 1 will get rid of dark circles and puffiness, so you won’t have to disguise them with make-up. Eyelash perming, where eyelashes are set on tiny rollers to give a wide-eyed look, has been big in Korea and Japan for years and is about to take off in Europe, but you will need to visit an experienced therapist. After that, all you need is the barest smudge of chocolate eyeliner, like MAC Technakohl Liner (€19) 2 in Brownborder.
Out to Dinner: 50s Flick
A sweep of eyeliner is best offset by a nude eyelid. Keep things simple with a smudge of Origin’s Underwear for Lids (€17) 3 . Then apply Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Eyeliner (€22) 4 with a stiff brush. Give eyes a feline look by loading the outer corner of the top lashes with an extra coat of Laura Mercier’s Thickening and Building Mascara (€23) 5 .
Off Clubbing: Modern Goth
Create a classic smoky eye with DuWop’s Smoke Palette (€30) 6 . It includes a creamy eyeliner and shimmering eye shadow in toning shades; use the eyeliner to line the upper and lower lashes and blend the shadow over the top to intensify the colour. Keep it modern by using deep aubergines and olive greens, rather than black or brown. Finish with a lick of Guerlain’s Lengthening Mascara (€24) 7 in Violet.
Power-plating
If you’re the sort of person who routinely skips the gym, claiming that you ‘can’t find the time’, you may need a new excuse. Having got the likes of Madonna, Kylie and Donatella Versace in a spin, the Power-Plate can provide muscles with an effective workout in just 25 minutes. Studies in Belgium found that whole body vibration achieved the same results as weight training in just a third of the time.
The Power-Plate vibrates at high speed, causing muscles to contract and relax at a rate of up to 50 times per second. Users, who perform gentle exercises like stretches and squats while standing on the plate, will be rewarded with a toned body, better flexibility and even reduced cellulite. However, fitness experts have warned that the Power-Plate can’t provide cardiovascular exercise to keep the heart healthy, so don’t hang up your running shoes just yet. Contact your local gym for more information.
January is traditionally the month to detox, so stock up on fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. Choose fish over red meat and keep your fluid intake high; drink at least two litres of water a day. Banish chocolate, cheese, cow’s milk, sugar, wheat and alcohol from your diet.
Follow our simple eating plan to see how much better you feel.
7.00am: Start your day with a cup of warm water and lemon juice – this will encourage the liver to expel toxins, and gently cleanse the bowels.
9.00am: Smoothies are an excellent way of upping your daily fruit intake; for breakfast, blend raspberries (which are rich in Vitamin C and full of antioxidants) with soya milk (which is fortified with calcium and protein).
11.00am: Replace your usual cup of coffee with herbal tea. Ease caffeine cravings with a cup of camomile tea, which is a natural sedative.
1.00pm: For lunch, dress tomatoes (which contain lycopene to guard against heart disease), spinach (to strengthen teeth and bones), yellow pepper (full of betacarotene to boost the immune system) and onion (the allicin in it is
anti-carcinogenic) with olive oil and lemon.
4.00pm: Instead of reaching for a chocolate bar to beat that mid-afternoon slump, snack on some fruit. Bananas are full of mood-lifting serotonin while plums are loaded with anti-ageing qualities.
7.00pm: Eat a light dinner; try grilled tuna, which is packed with essential fatty acids, with steamed broccoli, a rich source of folic acid, and red cabbage, which contains energy-giving Vitamin B.
