The Municipal Gallery is marking the centenary of Greek modernist artist Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika’s birth with an exhibition of 145 of his works. The show will feature paintings, sketches and silk-screen prints, and will focus upon the artist’s flair for design and engraving.

Berlin’s annual dance festival showcases the work of young choreographers and artists living in the city. This year the focus will be on young people, and the programme will include full-length dances choreographed by students, a feature that proved enormously popular last year.

Stockholm The Nutcracker/Petter and Lotta’s Christmas www.operan.se This annual production of The Nutcracker has become a Swedish tradition. This year Tchaikovsky’s ballet will be combined with the much loved Swedish children’s story Petter and Lotta. This enchanting performance is a must for ballet lovers and families alike.

Venice Witches on the Grand Canal www.turismovenezia.it
Each Epiphany day, an extraordinary race takes place in Venice. This year, over 50 men will take part in a costumed boat race which will see them don witches’ outfits, paddle up the Grand Canal from San Toma and race towards the giant Epiphany stocking that hangs from the Rialto Bridge.

Ronse The Bommel Festival www.visitflanders.com
Held on the first Saturday after Epiphany, the highlight of the Bommel Festival in the Flemish town of Ronse is the procession of ‘bommels’ or ‘corks’; characters dressed in enormous costumes who try to knock each other senseless as part of the festivities.

Prague
Days of European Film www.eurofilmfest.cz
First held in 1994, this annual festival has been showcasing the best of European film for 12 years. Past festivals have featured the work of artists such as Ken Loach and Stephen Frears. This year’s festival will show some 40 feature films and 10 short films from all over Europe.

Naples
Villa Communale Antique Fair www.fieraantiquaria.napoletana.it
The Villa Communale has a long tradition of hosting an antique fair on the third Sunday of every month. It attracts more than 100 antiques dealers, and visitors get the chance to browse silverware, lamps, books and jewellery alongside locals. Admission is free.

Valencia
Festival of Saint Vincent Matir www.communitatvalenciana.com Every year crowds gather to watch procession that commemorates the life of Saint Vincent, patron saint of Valencia. Locals dress as characters from Saint Vincent’s baptism and parade through the streets scattering petals in his honour. Those wanting to really get to grips with the festivities can see the mummified arm of the martyred St Vincent in Valencia Cathedral.

Winter Jazz Festival www.vinterjazz.dk
The annual winter jazz festival (which runs until 5 February) is becoming one of the most important dates on the Danish musical calendar, and this year will see 120 concerts take place at venues across the country. This celebration of jazz will feature live performances by Scandinavian artists, and appearances from international musicians including Brazilian pianist Tania Maria.

International Fashion Fair www.finnexpo.fi Fashionistas from all over Finland will be converging on Helsinki this month to take advantage of the opportunity to buy clothes from the new season’s collections before they hit the shops. There will also be accessories and make-up on display, and catwalk shows taking place throughout the event.
