The third Sunday of September sees the residents of Namur don stilts and prepare for battle in one of Belgium’s oldest and most bizarre customs. During the middle ages, locals learnt to walk on stilts in times of flooding. The habit has now graduated into an annual test of strength, skill and agility known as The Golden Stilt Contest. www.echasseurs.org
