24-28 Bologna Arte Fiera This fair was set up to make contemporary art accessible to everyone. More than 200 international galleries will contribute to this year’s event, with exhibits including an installation by Bill Viola, who found huge favour at Venice Biennale 2007. |

25 (until 4 February) Gothenburg 31st Gothenburg International Film Festival Since its inception in 1978, this has become one of the largest film festivals on the European circuit. This year there will be seminars, screenings and social events, as well as an international competition. |

30 (until 5 February) Berlin Going Underground 7 For one week every year, Going Underground screens 14 silent short films, each only 90 seconds long. What makes this short-film festival different is that they’re shown on U-Bahn trains and at the end of the week commuters vote for their favourites. |
