What is love?

It’s the eternal dilemma: what to do on Valentine’s to make it special without it turning into a cliché or costing a fortune. We travelled to some of our favourite destinations to find the perfect solution for your romantic break

Valentine’s Day is one of those schmaltzy dates in the calendar that seems engineered to rip you off. Given that the world is in financial meltdown and the credit crunch is biting, we sent out our scouts to find some unusual romantic hotspots that don’t involve forking out lots of cash and will demonstrate to your lover that you care far more than cheesy roses can ever say.

Stockholm

Let darkness descend upon the city, then take hold of your date’s hand and lead the way up to the cobblestoned square of Mosebacke. At these heights, Stockholm looks like a string of pearls sprinkled across the black waters below. To warm up, step inside Södra Teatern (1-3 Mosebacke Torg, tel , sodrateatern.com), a highly ornamented establishment where, in the tucked-away upstairs bar, you can enjoy a drink and that stunning view through floor-to-ceiling windows while sitting on a red velvet love seat. Vienna

Head up to Leopoldsberg, one of the green wooded hills within Vienna’s city limits. The cobbled streets that lead from the city’s vineyards up into the Vienna Woods are lined with secluded wine taverns. Leopoldsberg has the most spectacular views: by night, the white church is illuminated by spotlights and seems to hover above the hill. Afterwards take the bus back down to Heiligenstadt, find a cosy little corner in one of the many taverns and indulge in a glass or two of Grüner Veltliner. Jörg Michner

Barcelona

Lose yourselves – and the madding crowd – in the labyrinth of Barcelona’s oldest and most romantic park, the Parc del Laberint d’Horta, high on the hill behind the city. The cypress-hedge maze is the central point of this charming 18th-century garden – complete with pavilions, scantily clad nymphs, waterfalls and even a ‘Romantic canal’ – set in the shade of Mediterranean woodland.

A short metro ride from the centre transports you to this world apart, a far cry from the intense reality of the cutting-edge city below (Metro: L3, station: Llars Mundet). Judy Thomson

Nice

From Nice’s Gare Routière, hop on bus No. 81 to the sleepy port town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Stroll southwards, winding your way between sumptuous villas until you hit Paloma Beach, perfect for a romantic tête à tête. Want to ensure you won’t be disturbed? Loop around the peninsula’s coastal pathway where the rocky outcrops provide lots of isolated crevices (ideal for secluded snuggling!). Kathyrn Tomasetti

Budapest

Board the No. 59 tram to Farkasréti Temetö to reach one of Budapest’s most romantic spots, Sas-hegy (Eagle Hill), in Buda’s 11th district. The 30-hectare protected nature reserve on the top of the hill has walking trails and panoramic views of the city. Technically, a guide is needed to explore the place, but three can be a bit of a crowd, so just do as the locals do and slip through the broken fence. Carolyn Banfalvi

Prague

Take the metro to Vysehrad (159/5b V Pevnosti), a secluded hilltop fortress that’s usually overlooked by the tourist trail but commands some stunning views of the Czech capital. Take a romantic stroll through the castle’s pristine gardens and stop to admire the impressive neo-gothic church of Saint Paul and Peter and its famous cemetery – final resting place of notable Czechs like Alfons Mucha and Antonin Dvorak – absolutely unforgettable. Copenhagen

Board a horse-drawn carriage at the serene Dyrehaven, a former royal hunting park where about 2,000 deer still roam the grounds. Ask your driver to head towards the Eremitage Castle, an elegant 18th-century lodge built by King Christian VI. Spread over 1,000 hectares, this beautiful park is just a 15 to 20-minute train ride north of the city centre (Dyrehaven 1, Klampenborg, train station: Klampenborg, tel. ). Gwladys Fouché

Venice

The best Venetian views are bittersweet – as good for leaving a lover as for languishing in his or her arms. Perch on the pontoon at the stylish Linea d’Ombra restaurant () on the Zattere waterfront while sipping a prosecco. Continue the stroll from the basilica of La Salute around Punta della Dogana for one of Venice’s most beguiling backdrops, a reminder that Venice is a state of mind, a place for projecting your own poetic fantasies. Tel Aviv

Hire a bike at O-Fun (197 Ben Yehuda Street, , rentabikeisrael.com) and peddle down the city’s sweeping tayelet or promenade. Need a rest? A deckchair will set you back NIS 12/€2.30. With its prime beach-front location, Herbert Samuel (6 Koifman Street, ) is one of the hottest restaurants in Tel Aviv, run by the ‘prince of Israeli haute-cuisine’ Yonatan Roshfeld. The slim wooden shutters dividing the various dining nooks will give you a bit of privacy if you want to smooch. Ben Lowenstein

Antwerp

One step inside the Vlaeykensgang and you’re in another world. Escape the bustling city for a minute in this narrow 16th-century alleyway and step back in time, with little cottages, flower boxes, cobbled streets and the carillon bells echoing around you. Buy some Belgian chocolate or a tasty waffle from the nearby shops and share it with your lover. Stockholm À la tombée de la nuit, prenez la main de votre amoureux/amoureuse et prenez la tête pour monter jusqu’à la place en pavé de Mosebacke. À cette hauteur, Stockholm ressemble à un collier de perles illuminées, sur fond d’eaux noires, en contrebas.

Vienne Les routes pavées qui mènent des vignobles de la ville jusqu’à Vienna Woods sont bordées de tavernes sombres où l’on déguste du vin, et Leopoldsberg offre les vues les plus spectaculaires qui soient.

Barcelone Perdez-vous – loin de la foule excentrique – dans le labyrinthe du plus ancien et romantique parc de Barcelone, le Parc del Laberint, au sommet de la colline à l’arrière de la ville.

Nice Depuis la Gare Routière de Nice, embarquez dans le bus 81, direction la petite ville portuaire endormie de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. Descendez vers le Sud, en passant le long du chemin à côté de somptueuses demeures, jusqu’à la Plage Paloma, parfaite pour un tête-à-tête romantique.

Budapest Sas-hegy est l’un des endroits les plus romantiques de Budapest. Cette réserve naturelle protégée de 30 hectares est traversée de sentiers de randonnée et offre des vues panoramiques sur la ville.

Prague Faites un tour romantique des merveilleux jardins du château de Vysehrad et faites une halte pour admirer l’impressionnante cathédrale néo-gothique de Saint Paul et Pierre, avec son fameux cimetière – absolument inoubliable.

Copenhague Montez dans un attelage tiré par des chevaux dans la paisible Dyrehaven, une ancienne réserve de chasse royale où plus de 2000 cerfs sillonnent encore les terres.

Venise Les plus belles vues de Venise sont doucesamères, se prêtant autant à une scène de rupture qu’à une étreinte langoureuse dans les bras de son amant (e). Postez-vous sur le ponton du raffiné Linea d’Ombra (lineadombra.com) sur le bord du canal Zattere tout en sirotant un Prosecco.

Tel Aviv Louez un vélo et pédalez sur les chemins de promenade de la ville. Ensuite, rendez-vous chez Herbert Samuel (2 ) dans la rue Koifman, l’un des meilleurs restaurants du moment de Tel Aviv.

Anvers Dès que vous posez le pied dans le Vlaeykensgang à Anvers, vous entrez dans un autre monde. Évadez-vous de l’animation de la ville pour un instant, dans ce passage étroit du XVIe siècle et remontez le temps, avec de petites chaumières, des bacs à fleurs, des rues pavées, et le carillon dont les cloches résonnent aux alentours.

Stockholm Houd ’s nachts de hand van je geliefde stevig vast en leidt hem/haar de hele weg naar boven tot op de kasseien van het Mosebacke plein. Op deze hoogte lijkt de stad wel een lint van parels in een zwarte zee daarbeneden …

Wenen Volg de kasseien die je van de wijngaarden van de stad naar de Weense Wouden brengen. De weg wordt geflankeerd door tal van afgelegen wijnherbergen. Of trek naar de top van Leopoldsberg voor een spectaculair vergezicht.

Barcelona Verdwaal met z’n tweetjes – zonder pottenkijkers in de buurt – in het doolhof van het oudste en meest romantische park in de stad: het Parc del Laberint, hoog op de bergflank achter de stad.

Nice Stap vanuit het Gare Routière op bus 81 richting het slaperige stadje Saint-Jean-CapFerrat. Kuier zuidwaarts op kronkelende weggetjes tussen machtige villa’s naar het strand. Plage Paloma is ideaal voor een romantische tête-à-tête.

Boedapest Sas hegy is een van de meest romantische plekjes van Boedapest. Dit 30 hectaren groot beschermd natuurreservaat is bezaaid met wandelpaden en heeft een aantal mooie panoramische uitzichten op de stad voor jullie in petto.

Praag Maak een romantische wandeling door de majestueuze tuinen van kasteel Vysehrad en houd even halt om de indrukwekkende neogotische Sint Petrus en Paul Dom en zijn beroemde begraafplaats te bewonderen – onvergetelijk!

Kopenhagen Verken met paard en kar het rustgevende Dyrehaven, een voormalig koninklijk jachtpark waar nog steeds om en bij de 2000 herten leven.

Venetië De beste Venetiaanse uitzichten zijn bitterzoet: tegelijk uiterst geschikt om te breken met je geliefde of hem/haar liefdevol in je armen te houden. Strijk neer op de ponton van het mooie Linea d’Ombra (lineadombra.com) aan de waterkant van Zattere en geniet van een lekkere Prosecco.

Tel Aviv Huur een fiets (of een tandem) en daal af langs de kronkelige promenade van de stad. Zet daarna koers naar Herbert Samuel (2  
) op de Koifman straat, een van de beste restaurants in Tel Aviv.

Antwerpen Zodra je een voet zet in de Antwerpse Vlaeykensgang waan je je in een andere wereld. Keer de drukte van de stad de rug toe, kuier wat rond in dit smal 16e eeuws steegje en stap in de teletijdmachine: kleine arbeiderswoningen, bloembakken, kasseistraten en de beiaard die begint te luiden.
