Fashion-forward pop stars Madonna, Lily Allen, Janet Jackson, Kylie, Rihanna and (of course) Lady Gaga are personal friends of the designers. As muses and campaign girls, many of them are already rocking spring/summer 10’s hottest new trends. Holly Shackleton peeks into their wardrobes…

Underwear as outerwear

Underwear as outerwear is one of the biggest trends of 2010, and corsets, bras, bodices and bodysuits should no longer be banished to the bedroom but worked into your everyday wardrobe. Lingerie detailing was splashed across the catwalks of Dior, Fendi, Jean Paul Gaultier, Twenty8Twelve and Dolce & Gabbana, where the design duo’s signature corset dresses were stripped back to reveal lacy black bra tops and 50s-style lace-trimmed black knickers.

Always one step ahead of the herd, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are early adopters of this provocative trend. Rihanna – working hard at being crowned the next pop fashion icon – has already been spotted in figure-clinching corset and eye-catching black bra at the spring/ summer 10 Jean Paul Gaultier show in Paris. While Lady Gaga caused a kerfuffle stepping out in a pink satin bra and matching knickers at the Accessories Council Excellence Awards in New York, where she picked up the Stylemaker Award.

For those not quite ready to bare all just yet, there are plenty of ways to work 2010’s daredevil dressing into your everyday wardrobe. The high street is already aglow with some figure-enhancing corsets. Topshop’s gold-foil offering with moulded cups and sheer back is ideal for those wishing to work on their red-carpet credentials, while their sequin and grey denim body perfectly mirrors Dior’s film noir aesthetic.

For lashings of boudoir black lace, head straight to Zara, who drew inspiration from their Spanish roots with an array of seductively sophisticated basques and bodies.

Peak-shouldered military jackets

A firm favourite of Beyoncé and Victoria Beckham, nothing commands authority like a peaked-shoulder jacket. A trend that has been spearheaded by Balmain for the past few seasons, even the late, great Michael Jackson often stepped out head-to-toe in the label. Beyoncé and Rihanna have been quick to follow suit, both making regular public appearances in Balmain’s hugely coveted jackets. Recently, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole wowed audiences wearing a pillarbox red Ralph Lauren military jacket in the video for her single ‘Fight For This Love’ and sported scantier military-inspired outfits in red and in white for TV appearances.

For 2010, designers in London, Paris and New York continue to channel the peak-shouldered trend in new and novel ways. In London, Todd Lynn pushed the silhouette to the max, enhancing models’ shoulders with gargantuan armour-plated metal horns. French designer Roland Mouret opted for fuzzy fur in mustard yellow, while Karl Lagerfeld decided to give each of his girls a rock ’n’ roll edge with silver guitars for shoulders. Over at Balmain, Creative Director Christophe Decarnin continued perfecting his luxurious and lavishly embellished crystal-shouldered jackets.

While a Balmain jacket could set you back a hefty €8,000, you can still work it like Beyoncé. Online shopping emporium Asos’ black cotton military jacket with brass buttons is perfect for daytime wear, while French Connection’s military-inspired black leather jacket with asymmetric buttons, vamps it up for after dark. Meanwhile, Mango has a collection of black slinky dresses complete with sequined peak shoulders.

Show-stopping party frocks

Luckily for party girls like American singer-songwriter Katy Perry, short, tight and acid bright was the order of the day for dresses at Giorgio Armani, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Versace. For the latter psychedelic mini-dresses and floor-flowing evening gowns with cutaway chain-mail detailing paid tribute to the late Gianni Versace’s 90s heyday.

Lindsay Lohan’s debut as Artistic Advisor at Emmanuel Ungaro captured her youthful spirit with a collection that featured fuchsia pink bandage dresses that fashion magazines will no doubt snap Lindsay wearing out and about.

Katy Perry proved her passion for a pretty frock when she wore a dozen different outfits while hosting The MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, last November. These included a stunning Marchesa floor-length pink satin ensemble with black lace detailing and a tulip-skirted feathered number by Jenny Packham, as well as Victor & Rolf’s tulle ballgown, hot off the Paris runway and complete with quirky cut-outs.

To cement your own pop-star status, a show-stopping party dress is a must. Reiss’ flame Tiana tier dress is a watered-down version of Victor & Rolf’s epic ballgown, while the high-street store’s achingly sexy bandage dresses pay homage to Hervé Léger, the king of cling. Natan’s Lotus1 bustier dress in vibrant blue silk with raised pleats is another guaranteed head-turner.

House of Chanel

Chanel continues to take haute couture to giddy heights by breathing new life into the century-old brand with the help of British pop star Lily Allen. The face of Chanel’s Coco Cocoon handbags – a sportswear-inspired collection of padded, quilted handbags, totes, clutches and duffels – Lily lives and breathes Chanel. Rarely seen without one of the fabled house’s iconic 2.55 bags or rocking a head-to-toe Chanel look, the 24-year-old is a brilliant advocate for the brand and was the natural choice for Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld, when he was choosing the face of Chanel’s new accessories campaign.

Karl chose Allen for her sense of fun, and the budding pop fashionista certainly has bagfuls of that. Opening the Chanel spring/summer 10 catwalk show to a round of applause, she rose up from a country and western-inspired stage on a platform covered in hay, to perform a medley of Karl’s favourite Lily Allen hits, including ‘Not Fair’.

To get Lily’s look, gravitate towards prom-style dresses, chic skirt suits and classic Chanel 5012 black-and-white shades.

Eye-catching sunglasses

No discerning pop-star’s wardrobe is complete without a sensational pair of shades, and spring/summer 10 has a rainbow of colours and designs to choose from. Take Lady Gaga as a springboard for inspiration when it comes to choosing the perfect pair for you.

Rarely seen without an attention-commanding pair of sunglasses, Gaga favourites include Jeremy Scott’s Mickey Mouse frames, in collaboration with Linda Farrow, as worn in her ‘Paparazzi’ video, and a chic pair of white Carrera Champion shades worn in ‘Bad Romance’, together with glasses by Christian Dior, Gucci, Versace and Ray-Ban.

Lightweight fitted blazers are a must-have for 2010 and Kanye is naturally already rocking this trend. Choose yours in simple white, grey or narrow pinstripe and team it with a classic white shirt or with a round-neck T-shirt to channel Yeezy himself.
