Tired of all those guilt-ridden hangovers? Chris Peck starts the year on the wagon and savours the serenity
You spent the whole of December eating, drinking, and then drinking some more. So, you’re spending the whole of January making up with people you upset from being an offensive drunken mess. To save face and restore some dignity, perhaps try a night out at a bar that serves up a healthy selection of non-alcoholic treats…
Londoners are well known throughout Europe, and some say the rest of the world, for their drinking ability and its subsequent effects on the body. Some put these effects down to the fictitious ‘Heathrow injection’, supposedly administered as visitors pass through immigration causing the visitor to gain prodigious amounts of weight, often thanks to the significant amounts of alcohol consumed while in the capital.
If, however, you want to avoid the social stereotype of a drunken Londoner, take a tube direct to Artesian at The Langham Hotel (Portland Place, W1), where head bartender Ed Viita has created a range of divine non-alcoholic cocktails. Try the Ginger in a Pear Tree – pear juice, fresh ginger, lemon and maple syrup finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon – the perfect equivalent to an everyday rum punch.
While your friends may continue to spend their nights out painting the town red, pink or any other colour of Absolut vodka that takes their fancy, that doesn’t mean you can’t join them and still wake up with a clear head the next morning. Head to Bloom Bar (on the corner of King George and Sheinkin street), and by saying you are the designated driver, hot drinks, juices and all non-alcoholic drinks will be yours free of charge all night.
A city known for its history, culture and beautiful people, Romans are very susceptible to a little tipple come the end of the working day. Whether it’s an aperitivo, a digestif, an ice-cold beer, a martini or a sweet dessert wine, you will never be far from your next slurp. But in the spirit of giving your body a break from the booze, the complementary cocktails on offer at the De Russie Wellness zone (Via del Babuino) will more than make up for the December overdose. Treat yourself to an aromatic massage or Intense Nourishing facial followed by a Green energy cocktail, comprising green tea, lime and green apple juice.
Tabasco Bloody Mary mix
Even if we aren’t suffering from thumping heads this January, there’s still something satisfying about spending a Sunday morning in front of a log fire reminiscing about the previous evenings hilarity (which InOut will be remembering perfectly thanks to its no alcohol policy – you have been warned). Although self-styled as a Bloody Mary mix, Tabasco’s latest release makes for the easiest and tastiest Virgin Mary you could ask for.
Open, pour and enjoy the classic flavours, safe in the knowledge your liver has survived to see another year.
Well done you.
