My Barcelona

As if the Catalan capital wasn’t achingly hip enough, Europe’s first W hotel has now made it even sexier. Richard Bence met up with the W’s head concierge, Rodrigo Sampaio, to find out where Barcelona’s cool crowd congregates

An iconic city like Barcelona needs little introduction. Its amazing architecture, fabulous food and round-the-clock party scene have made it an essential destination. No matter how many times you’ve been before, Barcelona’s constant evolution means there’s always something new to experience – and with the W hotel winning it yet more style points, a visit here offers a fantastic combination of city and surf that’s hard to beat.

Day one

9:30 Start your day at the Boqueria Market (85 Ramblas, closed Sundays). The best time to go is early in the morning, because everything will be empty in the afternoon. Here you’ll get to see how people from Barcelona live and where they buy their food.

11:00 Nearby is the CCCB (Centre of Contemporary Culture, 5 Montalegre, tel. , www.cccb.org) in El Ravel. It showcases some of the best art and photography exhibitions in town, It’s a nice place to visit after the Ramblas, which might be a bit of tourist mecca but worth a stroll all the same.

12:30 Walk to the Cathedral (Plaça de la Catedral) and check out the quiet Sant Felip Neri square at Barrio Gótico.

14:00 One of my favourite places to have lunch is at the Cuines Santa Caterina (16 Calle Francesc Cambó, tel. ), where all the ingredients have been sourced from the Santa Caterina market in which the restaurant is housed.

15:00 After lunch, head to the Palau de Música (4 Calle del Palau de la Música, palaumusica.org), a concert hall built in 1905 by Domènech i Montaner, which is a good place to hear some opera, classical or rock music.

16:30 Walk to Paseo de Gràcia/Rambla Catalunya for shopping. The street has all the big internationally renowned designers and some great fashion stores. Just a few minutes from the Ramblas, drop into home-grown brand Custo Barcelona (36 Calle Ferran, custo-barcelona.com) for the latest Catalan fashion.

17:30 For traditional tapas, I always go to Piscolabis Tapas (27 Rambla Catalunya, tel. , angrup.com). The mix of traditional and innovative tapas in a modern space is what Barcelona is all about, blending old and new.

18:30 Then visit Casa Milà (92 Paseo de Gràcia), also known as La Pedrera. It was designed by Gaudí in 1912 and is one of his masterpieces (closes 8pm). If you talk about Barcelona, you talk of Gaudí or Barcelona football club.

21:30 I often recommend dinner at Lluçanès (Plaça de la Font, Mercat de la Barceloneta, tel. , restaurantllucanes.com). They serve modern Mediterranean food, great fish and good pork. In the 2009 Michelin Guide, it was awarded a Michelin star. Degustation menus are recommended here. (Closed Sunday evening and all day Monday.)

23:00 Go to the rooftop bar Eclipse (W Barcelona, Plaça de la Rosa dels Vents, starwoodhotels.com/whotels) and gaze down at the blinking beauty of Barcelona at night, with a cocktail in your hand. (And I’m not just saying that because it’s at the W, I promise).

Day two

10:00 Visit Gaudí’s famous Sagrada Família church (401 Calle Mallorca). It’s the most visited monument in the whole of Spain, so it’s good to get there early.

12:00 Go to Parc Güell (Calle Olot), another Gaudí creation, where you get one of the best views of the city. It is a magical place, and reminds me a bit of an alien spaceship (in a good way).

14:00 Lunch at Comerç 24 (24 Calle Comerç, tel. , www.commerc24.com). It’s a charming place from the renowned Carles Abellán, who was previously at elBulli. He’s one of Barcelona’s most important chefs. Traditional ingredients are mixed with innovative cuisine. He also has the Bravo 24 restaurant at the W hotel.

16:00 Visit Museo Picasso (15 Calle Montcada, La Ribera, tel. , www.museupicasso.bcn.es), which has a great collection of the artist’s work, housed in a rather fabulous old building. I recommend at least two hours here. (Closed Mondays.)

18:30 Visit the El Borne area, including Santa María del Mar church, which is mentioned in the best-seller, The Cathedral of the Sea, by Ildefonso Falcones. This is also a great place to get lost in the warren of streets.

19:30 Walk to Barceloneta (formerly a fishing village), where there is still a friendly local vibe and Port Olimpic (built for the 1992 Olympics) to enjoy the dramatic sea views.

21:00 Paella at restaurant Agua (30 Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, tel. , www.aguatragaluz.com) is great any time of year. If you come to Spain, you have to have paella. Inside it’s cosy with cool décor, while outside there’s a great terrace with a sea view for when the weather warms up.

23:00 One of the hottest joints in town at the moment is CDLC (32 Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, tel. , www.cdlcbarcelona.com), which has a beautiful interior, with international DJs, live music and Spain’s jet set sipping cocktails while lounging in white-mattressed alcoves. Very cool.

01:00 Club Solo (7 Passatge de la Concepció, tel. , www.clubsolo.es) is the business for anyone who wants to dance with the beautiful people. Located in the heart of Barcelona, near Paseo de Gràcia, this club has four stylish spaces, each offering a variety of music. Don’t go before midnight because everyone goes out late in Barcelona.

11.00 Non loin se trouve le Centre d’Art Contemporain (Montalegre, 5) dans El Ravel où sont présentées quelques-unes des plus belles expositions d’art et de photographie de la ville. 12:30 Marchez jusqu’à la Cathédrale (Plaça de la Catedral) et appréciez la quiétude de la place Sant Felip Neri au Barrio Gótico (Quartier gothique).
14.00 Déjeunez à la Cuines Santa Caterina (Calle Francesc Cambó, 20) pour des produits frais locaux.
15.00 Dirigez-vous au Palau de Música (Calle del Palau de la Música, 4) un hall de concert construit en 1905 par Domench Montaner.
16.30 Promenez-vous le long de Paseo de Gràcia/Rambla Catalunya pour faire du shopping, achetez des produits de la marque à 100% locale Custo Barcelona (Calle Ferran, 36).
17.30 Pour des tapas espagnoles traditionnelles, entrez dans le Piscolabis Tapas (Rambla Catalunya).
18.30 Visitez la Casa Milà (La Pedrera – Paseo de Gràcia, 92), l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de Gaudi.
21.30 Dînez chez Llucanes, étoilé au Michelin. Un must (Placa de la Font, Mercat de la Barceloneta).
23.00 Prenez un verre à l’Eclipse (W Barcelona, Placa de la Rosa dels Vents) et profitez des plus belles vues de la ville la nuit.

Jour 2

10:00 Visitez la célèbre Sagrada Familia de Gaudi (Calle Mallorca, 401). C’est le monument le plus visité d’Espagne.
12:00 Le Parc Guell (Calle Olot) est une autre création magique de Gaudi.
14:00 Déjeunez au Comerç 24 (Calle Comerç, 24) où officie le réputé chef Catalan Carles Abellan (el Bulli).
16:00 Visitez le Museo Picasso (Calle Montcada, 15 – La Ribera) qui comprend une fabuleuse collection des œuvres de l’artiste.
18:30 Perdez-vous dans les petites ruelles typiques du quartier d’El Borne et visitez l’église Santa María del Mar.
19:30 Marchez jusqu’à Barceloneta où l’ambiance est toujours vivante et amicale et au Port Olimpic pour apprécier les vues somptueuses de la mer.
21:00 Une paëlla au restaurant Agua (Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, 30) est fabuleuse à n’importe quel moment de l’année.
23:00 CDLC (Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, 32) offre un magnifique intérieur avec des DJ internationaux qui attirent la jetset espagnole.
01:00 Dansez avec les noctambules au Club Solo (Passatge de la Concepció, 7).

14.00 Lunch bij Cuines Santa Caterina (Calle Francesc Cambó, 20) en geniet er van de verse lokale producten.
15.00 Ga naar het Palau de Música (Calle del Palau de la Música, 4), een concertzaal die in 1905 gebouwd werd door Domench Montaner.
16.30 Wandel naar de Paseo de Gràcia/Rambla Catalunya om er te shoppen, wip eens binnen bij Custo Barcelona, een merk van eigen bodem (Calle Ferran, 36).
17.30 Traditionele Spaanse tapas vind je bij Piscolabis Tapas (Rambla Catalunya).
18.30 Bezoek Casa Milà (La Pedrera – Paseo de Gràcia, 92), één van de meesterwerken van Gaudi.
21.30 Dineren in het met een Michelinster bekroonde Llucanes is een must (Placa de la Font, Mercat de la Barceloneta).
23.00 Ga iets drinken bij Eclipse (W Barcelona, Placa de la Rosa dels Vents) voor het beste uitzicht over de stad die zich hult in de nacht.

Dag twee

10:00 Bezoek de beroemde Sagrada Familia van Gaudi (Calle Mallorca, 401). Het is het meest bezochte monument in Spanje.
12:00 Parc Guell (Calle Olot) is nog zulke magische creatie van Gaudi.
14:00 Neem de lunch bij Comerç 24 (Calle Comerç, 24) van de befaamde Catalaanse chef-kok Carles Abellan (el Bulli).
16:00 Bezoek het Museo Picasso (Calle Montcada, 15 – La Ribera) waar je een schitterende collectie van het werk van de grootmeester kan bewonderen.
18:30 Verdwaal in de wirwar aan straatjes van El Borne en breng een bezoek aan de Santa María del Mar-kerk.
19:30 Wandel richting Barceloneta, met zijn Olympische haven, waar u de vriendelijke lokale sfeer nog terugvindt, om er te genieten van het indrukwekkende zicht op zee.
21:00 In restaurant Agua (Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, 30) is de paella steeds even fantastisch.
23:00 CDLC (Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta, 32) trekt de Spaanse jetset aan met zijn prachtige interieur en zijn internationale DJ.
01:00 Dans tussen de beau monde in Club Solo (Passatge de la Concepció, 7).
