In out

Dinner music takes on a whole new meaning in these cutting-edge restaurant/club venues Christmas

3 of the best: Musical evenings

InOut has always believed that eating your dinner and going out dancing are two entirely separate disciplines, and should remain so. But it’s never too late to change, especially when you consider the current crop of restaurants reviving the notion of dinner and dancing and giving it a contemporary twist. So with that in mind InOut has been making the most of these cold winter nights by testing out some of Europe’s best nightspots for grazing and grooving

Cocoon FRANKFURT
21 Carl-Benz-Straße, tel.+49 (0)69 900200, www.cocoonclub.net
Cocoon is famous for its cavernous club space, presided over by proprietor Sven Väth, but it also has two restaurants appended to it. There’s the Michelin- starred Silk Bed Restaurant, which serves a 13-course tasting menu in pristine white surroundings, and Micro, where the lounge is transformed into a dancefloor once dinner is over.

Eat Alaska black cod, miso and Japanese aubergine.
Drink A Titanic – blue Curaçao, vodka, lime, sugar and ginger ale.
Hear Sven Väth is a given, but December’s line-up also includes Marco Carola, Onur Özer, Karotte and Mousse T.

A38 BUDAPEST
Near PetöfiBridge, Buda side tel. +361 464 3946, www.a38.hu
Once a Ukrainian freighter, A38’s upper level now houses a restaurant while the lower deck is a club-cum-lounge which hosts both big name acts and up-and- coming local talent.

Eat Lamb cutlets with bulgar wheat.
Drink A Mai Tai – rum, triple sec, apricot brandy and pineapple juice.
Hear Gogol Bordello, the Brand New Heavies and Maceo Parker.

Centrale Restaurant Lounge VENICE
1659B Piscina Frezzeria, tel. +39 041 296 0664, www.centrale-lounge.com
Centrale’s eclectic music policy pulls in a high celebrity head count – Ornella Muti, Spike Lee and Juliette Binoche have all been spotted here.

Eat Tortellini filled with lobster and walnuts.
Drink A Centrale – green apple vodka with pineapple juice, passionfruit and coconut milk.
Hear Live acts, lounge music and DJ sets. DJ Isaac is lined up to play on New Year’s Eve.

Cocktail corner

Christmas Rum Punch
What to drink now Christmas is just around the corner?
Naturally you want to give a nod to the season, but presumably you’ve been mainlining mulled wine since November and no one with any respect for their waistline actually likes eggnog. Step forward Christmas Rum Punch, rendered pleasingly tart by the addition of lime and Angostura bitters, but with enough rum in it to warm winter-weary bones:

Fill a glass with ice and add a dash of Angostura bitters.
Blend together one part lime juice, two parts De Kuyper grenadine, three parts dark rum and four parts soda water and pour over. Serve with a sprinkling of grated nutmeg.
