The Milan Furniture Fair rolls into town this month. In homage to this, our design expert, Bethan Ryder, spotlights the most beautifully designed restaurants in Europe

Anyone who’s anyone in the world of interiors will be converging on Milan for the annual Furniture Fair in Design Week (22-27 April, cosmit.it). The Salone Internazionale del Mobile, as it is offically known, is the best place to spot creative young design talent. But you could just as easily spot tomorrow’s superstars in the hot-list of design-led restaurants and bars that lie ahead. Dining out is an event and we all like a glamorous backdrop, don’t we?

Pontus! STOCKHOLM

The flagship restaurant of Sweden’s celebrity gourmet chef Pontus Frithiof offers three very different experiences. Cool white Scandinavian design reigns in the simple white oyster and champagne bar, which serves more than 10 types of oysters. In the double-height restaurant downstairs, with trompe l’oeil walls featuring chaotic bookshelves, you get an haute cuisine menu using startlingly fresh ingredients. And there’s also an upstairs Cocktail Bar with a small Asian restaurant.

La Terraza MADRID

Maverick Spanish designer Jaime Hayon created this lavishly spectacular neo-baroque restaurant, overseen by star chef Paco Roncero. A fantasy vision of white and pale blue, it’s furnished with his pieces – from the grand chandeliers and high-backed hooded chairs to the porcelain figurines. With its polished chequerboard floor, high ceilings, mirrored doorways and columns, it’s a classic with an Alice in Wonderland twist.

Somewhat crazily decorated, this boutique, restaurant and bar was concocted by Russian fashion designer Denis Simachev and is popular with the city’s fashionistas. Its über-smart location is right in the middle of a luxury retail stretch dotted with the glossy boutiques of Dior, Hermes and Vuitton. Shop upstairs, then head downstairs for party central. Bizarre design details include elements from British pubs, golden taps, crystal chandeliers and objet d’arts sourced from flea markets.

Gold by name and gold by nature, this is probably the world’s most blinging restaurant, bistro, bar and club, created by fashion duo Dolce & Gabbana. Mirrored walls, ingot details and a 1970s feel – Bond would be in his element. Dine from a menu with southern Italian influences while seated on white Brno leather chairs and lap up the golden glow.

Inspired by a “white library”, this elegant lounge-bar/restaurant was dreamt up by famous Greek film director Antonis Kalogrides and is housed within the Classical King George Palace Hotel. Sip cocktails while surrounded by star design pieces – Front’s black horse lamps for Moooi, Philippe Starck’s golden Gun Lamps for Flos, black Baccarat chandeliers and Maarten Baas’s Smoke chairs. Making graffiti cool are the tattoo-like slogans by artist Scott Campbell, while the rest of the walls are filled with paintings by Konstantin Kakanias.

Cocoon Club FRANKFURT

This futuristic super-club empire, conceived by jet-set German techno DJ Sven Väth, is often dubbed the best-designed club in the world. Cocoon also contains Micro, a Eurasian restaurant with flexible modular seating, and next door is the Michelin-starred Silk Bed Restaurant, a white reclining dining space. The main event is the Cocoon Club, where DJs play from an altar resembling something from outer space and dancers are surrounded by an organic membrane wall enlivened by projections and containing communal pods from where you can watch the action. Quite out of this world.

Peacock Dinner Club GOTHENBURG

This dazzling supper club, which attracts international DJs, was designed by hot architect duo Andreas Lyckefors and John Olsson. Illuminated walls feature a peacock pattern, a nod to its 1960s incarnation as the popular night spot the Blue Peacock. Perch on the Konstantin Grcic stool at the golden central bar and watch the crowd strut their stuff. It recently spawned a sequel in Stockholm.

This vast Thai restaurant is in Sport City, close to Manchester Stadium. Elements – the arena-style layout, Buddhas and opium-den colour scheme – are reminiscent of Paris’ Buddha Bar, and no wonder because it’s the creation of Portuguese architect-designer Miguel Cancio Martins. Huge, futuristic cocoons provide ample opportunity for communal lounging in the bar upstairs.

Bob Bob Ricard LONDON

This marble-clad Soho dining establishment by highly acclaimed designer David Collins was inspired by the halcyon days of steam travel and European brasseries. Sit back in the intimate dining booths and press your own personal button for “champagne”, then watch pink-clad waiters scurry past when your table number illuminates above the bar. Downstairs, cut a dash in the bar on the backgammon-patterned floor.

Nikki Beach MARBELLA

What started in Miami has now become a global chain. This Nikki Beach outpost on the Costa del Sol follows the successful formula: a decked terrace furnished with dreamy white beds, white awnings and plush cushions for lounging celebs, wannabes and scantily clad beauties. Serves Spanish fusion food and champagne is the drink du nuit. Open from April to October.

FR Design des temps modernes

Dans l’élégant lounge-bar restaurant T-Palace, situé dans le Palace Hôtel King George à Athènes, savourez un cocktail dans un environnement où dominent le mobilier et les objets de stars du design : Front, Philippe Starck, Maarten Baas et Scott Campbell, l’un des artistes les plus importants du mouvement graffiti.

Souvent désigné comme le club le plus design du monde, le futuriste Cocoon à Francfort se compose du restaurant eurasien Micro, du restaurant Silk Bed étoilé au Michelin, et du Club Cocoon, où les danseurs sont entourés d’images projetées sur des murs ‘membranes’.

Le Nikki Beach de Marbella s’inscrit dans la formule de la chaîne à succès : terrasse sur deux niveaux, des lits et des tentes dans des nuances de blanc pour les célébrités du lounging, pour ceux qui veulent en être et pour les beautés en tenue légère.

Hissez-vous sur une chaise de Konstantin Grcic dans le luxueux bar central du Peacock Dinner Club, à Gothenburg, et regardez la foule se déhancher sur les ambiances des DJ de la scène internationale.

Pontus! à Stockholm, le restaurant du célèbre chef suédois Pontus Frithiof, propose un bar à huîtres et champagne ainsi qu’un restaurant à deux étages avec un menu de haute cuisine et un Cocktail Bar.

Dans le quartier de Soho à Londres, le Bob Bob Ricard, au sol en marbre est une réminiscence de l’époque des trains à vapeur. Plongez-vous dans l’intimité des ‘box’ pour le dîner, et appuyez sur le bouton marqué “champagne”.

Le designer espagnol Jaime Hayon a créé le restaurant néo-baroque La Terraza au Casino de Madrid (avec le chef illustre Paco Roncero) en jouant avec ses propres installations – depuis des chaises à capuchon et à haut dossier jusqu’à des figurines en porcelaine.

Vermilion & Cinnabar, un vaste restaurant Thai conçu par Miguel Cancio Martins, se situe dans Sport City, près du Stade de Manchester. Certains éléments rappellent son autre création, le Buddha Bar à Paris.

Gold est sans doute le restaurant, bistro, bar et club le plus clinquant du monde. Créé par Dolce & Gabbana à Milan, il comprend des murs en miroir, des détails en forme de lingots et une ambiance de l’époque 1970.

La boutique, le restaurant et le bar du designer Denis Simachev, dans l’un des quartiers les plus branchés de Moscou, est le rendez-vous des people. On y retrouve pêle-mêle des objets hétéroclites empruntés aux pubs anglais, des robinets en or et des pièces de marchés aux puces.

In het elegante lounge-bar-restaurant T-Palace, in het King George Palace Hotel in Athene, neemt u een teugje van de heerlijkste cocktails terwijl u omringd bent met topdesignelementen van Front, Philippe Starck, Maarten Baas en graffiti/ tattoo-kunstenaar Scott Campbell.

De futuristische Cocoon in Frankfurt, die vaak wordt omschreven als de club met het mooiste design ter wereld, omvat het Euraziatische restaurant Micro, het met Michelin-sterren gelauwerde Silk Bed Restaurant en de Cocoon Club, waar de dansende gasten worden omgeven met projecties op een membraanwand.

De Nikki Beach-buitenpost in Marbella volgt de succesformule van de keten: een plankenterras met witte ligbedden en witte zonneschermen voor het loungende celebrity-volkje, wannabe’s en schaars geklede schoonheden.

Ga even zitten op een krukje van Konstantin Grcic in de gouden centrale bar van de Peacock Dinner Club in het Zweedse Göteborg en zie hoe de aanwezigen zich gewillig laten leiden door internationale DJ’s.

Pontus!, het Stockholms restaurant van Zwedens bekendste chef Pontus Frithiof, pakt uit met een simpele spierwitte oester- en champagnebar, een restaurant met een duizelingwekkend hoog plafond en “haute cuisine”-menu en een Cocktail Bar.

De in een marmeren jasje gestoken Bob Bob Ricard, in de Londonse wijk Soho, haalde z’n inspiratie uit de vredige stoomtreinentijd. Ga zitten aan de intieme eet-bankstelletjes en druk op de knop waar “champagne” op staat.

Spaans designer Jaime Hayon creëerde het neobarokke restaurant La Terraza in het Casino van Madrid (met topchef Paco Roncero) waarbij hij zijn eigen stukken gebruikte – van de stoelen met overkapping en hoge rug tot de figuurtjes in porselein.

Vermilion & Cinnabar, een groot Thais restaurant naar een ontwerp van Miguel Cancio Martins, is terug te vinden in Sport City, in de buurt van het Manchester Stadium. Bepaalde elementen doen denken aan één van zijn andere creaties, de Buddha Bar in Parijs.

Gold is naar alle waarschijnlijkheid een restaurant-, bistro-, bar- en clubcombinatie met het hoogste oogverblindende vermogen. Deze creatie van Dolce & Gabbana in Milaan dweept met spiegelwanden, goudstaafachtige details en een serieus 1970’s-gevoel.

Het stekje van designer Denis Simachev – boetiek, restaurant en bar – in een van de chicste locaties van Moskou, is de place to be voor de modefanaat. Decorelementen uit Britse pubs, gouden kraantjes en allerlei spullen van de rommelmarkt zorgen voor een wat bizarre aanblik.
